In Genesis 6:7 it is written: “the Lord (YHWH) said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens,” But in the next verse: “But Noah found favor/grace in the eyes of the Lord”
How did Noah find grace? Was it completely unmerited?
Gen.6:9 says “Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God.”
Noah may have been the only man who sought the Lord in a world filled with selfish, immoral people. Noah walked with God. He didn’t simply confess God once in his life and consider himself “good to go” for the rest of his life. He daily even hourly lived his existence with God and in God’s grace.
Noah found grace and he held on to grace.
After Genesis records some of the details that God gave Noah about making the ark, it says; “Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.” (6:22)
After Noah found God’s grace, He continued to obey God and ALL of God’s rather tedious commands. Noah didn’t just obey some of them and say “I found God’s grace…I am under grace…” No. He obeyed every detail of God’s commands.
In the next chapter; Noah is given more instructions and 7:5 says “And Noah did all that the Lord had commanded him.” After some more instructions, in verse 9: Noah did “as God had commanded Noah.”
We know what happens to everyone else. They get covered in the flood waters. “Only Noah was left, and those who were with him in the ark.” (7:23) “But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the livestock that were with him in the ark.” (8:1) Only the man who had obeyed God and those with him survived.
(8:15-18) “Then God said to Noah, “Go out from the ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your sons’ wives with you…. So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him.”
(9:1)”And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.” Later, God even establishes His covenant with ALL of the animals that Noah kept in the ark!
It seems to me that they key to keeping God’s favor for Noah, was found in diligent obedience, every step of the way. Yes, we have the perfect mediator, our Lord Jesus Christ, who has established a better covenant for us (Hebrews 8:6) but Heb.10:26-29 says: ” if we go on sinning/disobeying deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”
I don’t pretend to understand all of that but, it is true that Judgement begins in the house of the Lord. (1 Peter 4:17)
A big storm is coming…Seek more of God, more of His favor and be diligent to obey ALL that He asks of you. We find more grace by humbling ourselves in obedience to God. (James 4:10)
