Life is full of opportunities to trip us up and we all trip and fall regularly. Proverbs says “The righteous man falls 7 times but, He will get up again!”
The point isn’t that God expects us to stop stumbling all-together. He wants us to recognize our weakness and turn to him. For me, this used to mean turning to the Scriptures.
I believe that I had allowed the Scriptures to become a “stumbling block” in my life. I was convinced that the Bible had the answer to every problem and all I needed to do was to know more of the Bible! I memorized verses, chapters and even an entire book…but all of that knowledge couldn’t replace what I was really missing….Relationship.
The Bible is meant to lead us to God but ,I had allowed the Bible to become a god to me. I was pondering how the Bible could possibly be a “stumbling stone” to a relationship with God and I realized that is exactly what the Pharisees did!
Jesus rebuked them in John 5:39, saying:”You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me.” The Pharisees were some of the most knowledgeable and verses in the Scriptures of anyone! They had flawless doctrine (Matt.23:3) and labored to obey every specific detail of God’s written words (Matt.23:23) but, their hearts were far from God.
Because they didn’t know God. They knew all about God but, they didn’t really have a good relationship with Him. They didn’t talk to Him as a friend, walk with Him and dine with Him (like the Disciples did). No, they were much to busy for that…busy, critiquing everyone else lifestyles according to their knowledge of the Scriptures.
In the meantime, Jesus…God, in the flesh, was walking amongst them.
My point is that the Bible itself can be a stumbling block without the light of God’s presence (by the Holy Spirit). Because what is a stepping stone in the light, is a stumbling block in the dark.
The Bible is our road-map to liberty in Christ! It is not a book of regulations. We have been set free to follow the Spirit! We haven’t been set free to follow the Bible, letter by letter.
I literally just found this version and love it! (Aramaic Bible in Plain English)- “He who made us worthy to be Ministers of The New Covenant, not in The Scripture, but in The Spirit, for The Scripture kills, but The Spirit gives life.“- 2 Cor.3:6
We must not try to depend on our own understanding especially when we read the Scriptures but know and believe that the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth! Otherwise, we will be stumbling in the dark instead of walking on stepping stones in the light!
