The Dangerous Deception of Cessationism

Jesus; the way the truth and the life has promised that the Holy Spirit would guide us into all truth. He promised that the Holy Spirit would bring to remembrance everything that He taught us and if we obey His commandments (simply to love God and others) that we would know the truth and the truth would set us free.

It’s the truth that frees us because deception is bondage. The more we see Jesus with unveiled eyes and know Him as He truly is, the more free we are!

I wish that I could claim to be there but, it is a process…a walk in the Holy Spirit.

But, there is one truth that has set me free from deception and that is the lie that the Holy Spirit no longer works in spiritual gifts, dreams, signs and wonders in the Body of Christ today. This is largely based on a lack of experience in the Western church; despite many, many documented miracles (especially in the Eastern world) and has become a stronghold of the enemy.

This does not mean that the Christians that deny that “Jesus Christ is the same; yesterday, today and forever” love God any less than we do but, they have believed a lie and are in serious error. The deception is mostly based on ONE mysterious chapter, which has been misunderstood as describing something that has already happened that has seriously stunted the Churches knowledge of God.

1 Corinthians 13 is called “the love chapter” because it gives the best description of charity, or agape love in the Bible. But, it is also nestled between the 2 chapters in the Bible that most detail spiritual gifts and how to use them.

But, there are some very important truths about this love chapter that our brother’s in Christ should recognize…

1st- When this chapter describes the “ceasing of prophecies and tongues” it also describes the end of knowledge. (13:8-10) Clearly that hasn’t happened. Daniel prophesied that knowledge will increase and it still is.

Paul also describes a time that the childish things passed when he matured in a past tense and yet; Paul wrote in the very next chapter “pursue love and earnestly desire spiritual gifts…”(14:1) and that “I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.”(14:18)

2nd- I don’t fully understand what Paul meant about “giving up the childish ways” but, he clearly wasn’t saying that he no longer operated in spiritual gifts.

More importantly than all of these misconceptions is the result of this unbelief.

Because 1 Cor.13:12 has become a stumbling block to the maturity of the “unbelieving believer”.

For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.”

3rdly-The Christian that believes that the perfect has come and the partial has passed away, may not even realize it but, they are claiming to see face to face. They are unintentionally accepting that they NOW “know fully, even as they have been fully known!”

Basically, they are claiming that they have already arrived and that they have all of the revelation of God that they need! These verses are all prophecies that have not been fulfilled and they are unwittingly claiming that they are already fulfilled.

My question is: Has these deceptions become self-fulfilling prophecies? Is this a “strong delusion” that God has given them over to? Just a thought…

1 John 3:2 says: “Beloved, now we are children (tekna/child=still immature) of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is.

The Apostle John also included himself as a immature/child that does not know fully because that won’t happen until Jesus appears! Who are we to think that we already know fully?

He goes in in 4:12 “No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.” and 4:18 “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.”

The Apostles all wrote, inspired by the same Holy Spirit. John confirmed what Paul wrote about “the perfect/complete” in “the love chapter” and elaborated on what perfect love looks like.

Perfect/complete love has absolutely no fear! Has love been perfected in you? Because I know it has not been completed in me and that means that I don’t fully know God yet.

Do you?

Perfected love and knowledge of God go hand-in-hand in the Scriptures and I will prove it in the next post but, this one is getting long.

This post is not intended to condemn you! I doubt that it will convince you about what I believe 1 Cor. 13 truly means. However; I pray that you take this seed, seek the Lord in searching the Scriptures and especially in prayer about this!

Rest in the truth that it is God’s will that you know the truth, be set free and walk in the truth…it brings the Father joy! It’s not about “being wrong or right”…it’s about pleasing our Father. He draws us to repentance by His kindness and His light shines bright in the darkness because the darkness cannot overcome His light! Where sin/deception abounds, grace over-abounds! His Spirit will guide you into all truth because he gives more grace to the humble! Humble yourself before the Lord and He will lift you up! (too many Scriptures to list!)
