Col.1:19 “For in him (Jesus) all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell…” and 2:9,10 “For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.”
The fullness of God the Father, and the Spirit dwelt in the fullness of the Son, the Word. I don’t believe that the Bible declares the fullness of God ever dwelt in the Father or the Spirit but, only in Jesus. Because Jesus was the “last Adam” the first-fruits of the sons of God, our perfect example of what the Kingdom of God looks like.
We have received (have-past tense) out of His fullness! (John 1:16) “and out of his fulness did we all receive, and grace over-against grace;” (grace upon grace).
For a long time, I pleaded with God to give me the fullness of the Spirit but, this verse in John 3 began to “pop” into my head. Finally, I asked God “have you already given me the fullness of the Spirit” and I believe that he answered by “unlocking” or “removing the veil” of this truth.
John 3:31-32,34-“He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. 32He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony…. “For he is sent by God. He speaks God’s rhema/ words, for God gives him the Spirit without limit.”
Jesus was sent from above but, the Holy Spirit was also sent from above, so this has multiple meanings. When we are born again, the Spirit is sent to join with our spirit and bear witness, speak God’s words to us. As much as we receive His testimony, we receive God, His promises and His power. God has given is the spirit without limit, we already have the fullness of the Spirit! (in heavenly places/our spirit.)
Heaven can refer to the spirit realm and earth the bodily realm. 2 Cor.5:1,2 “For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling,“
This is important because, we can’t always think of fluffy white clouds and streets of gold when we read the word “heaven” in the Bible. Sometimes, it is being used symbolically about the spiritual realm.
Also Isaiah 55:8,9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
9For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Everything of us, that is our flesh; is earthly and corrupted because earth is dirty. But spiritual, heavenly things of God are pure and complete.
It’s our spirit that is joined to God. “And he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit” (1 Cor.6:17) and united with Him in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing. “even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Eph.2:5,6) …”has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,” (Eph.1:3)
Later in Eph.3:19, Paul prays that they may “know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
We have the fullness of the Holy Spirit joined to our spirit but, God doesn’t want to stop there! He wants to manifest the fullness of Himself (God, Son and Spirit) in our entire beings! Paul wasn’t praying something that isn’t God’s will and he surely wasn’t praying something that isn’t God’s will for this lifetime.
I believe that he was praying God’s will for all believers now! But, there seems to be conditions in the preceding verses (3:16-17) about how we get to that place.
Let’s live like the fullness of he Holy Spirit lives in us and press into God to reveal the fullness of His love in us now! Now is the time that the world needs God’s light to shine in us even brighter and the fullness of His Spirit is in us, waiting to manifest to the world!
