Rev.3 to Laodicea “
I know your actions, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were cold or hot. 16
Since you are lukewarm and neither hot nor cold, I am going to spit you out of my mouth. 17
You say, “I am rich. I have become wealthy. I don’t need anything.” Yet you don’t realize that you are miserable, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. 18
Therefore, I advise you to buy from me gold purified in fire so you may be rich, white clothes to wear so your shameful nakedness won’t show, and ointment to put on your eyes so you may see. 19
I correct and discipline those whom I love, so be serious and repent!
I believe hot and cold can mean multiple things but one of them is righteous and unrighteous. They are luke-warm, having been born again and declared righteous but their actions are not based on righteousness of faith. They lack spiritual wisdom and true faith. (Gold) They are spiritually poor and not even wearing the robe of righteousness because they can’t spiritually perceive.
Obviously they cannot truly BUY gold but, wisdom is given to those who ask and faith purified through fire makes us “more rich” but, most importantly; they need to do these things because they lead to righteousness of faith. Not just being born-again but, continuing to adorn the righteousness of God to protect our hearts!
The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin because they do not know the Father. He convicts the believer of righteousness because Jesus is at the Father’s right hand and we are (in spirit) united with him, with every spiritual blessing. The robe of righteousness/breastplate will protect our hearts from condemnation and helps us stand in the power of God when the enemy attacks.
I believe it also protects our heart because it is truth. 1 John 3:19b “we are of the truth, and will assure our heart before Him 20in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart and knows all things. 21Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God
The truth is that we are righteous and that truth gives us confidence before God and there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus so even our heart should not be able to condemn us because God is in our spirit and his righteousness is greater than our hearts!
Now that sounds like a practical understanding of a breastplate that cannot be penetrated!
Eph.4 “you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, 23and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.
Consider the language that Paul uses when talking to these faithful believers in Christ Jesus:
Lay aside (like a soiled rag) the old self and put on (like a breastplate or white robe) the new self WHICH IS created in the likeness of God Righteous, holy in truth.
He’s not saying “get born again” because they are already created new and in the faith of Christ Jesus. He is addressing brethren in Christ! He emphasizes that we must wear this righteousness that we have been given and NEVER let anything convince us otherwise.
Your righteousness in Christ is a done deal. Wisdom is believing it and never letting anything disrobe you!
(There is so much more good stuff about this in Rom.3, 5, 6 and 8 but that would make it twice as long…haha)
