WHAT IS HOLY?
So many words have been twisted over time. They have been given meanings that are different from their original intent and it has caused confusion concerning truth. The word “holy” in our culture usually carries the idea of something that is “perfect, pure or deeply religious”. However; according to God’s original use it simply means “set-apart, not of the world or uncommon.”
Holiness is not a state of purity that we attain. Holiness is simply being different from the world because of God’s will. Every “born-again” child of God is by definition holy because God has set them apart.
Consider how God used analogies to show how we are connected to Him.“I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.” (Rev.22:16)
Paul wrote our Jesus, our source “if the root is holy, the branches are too.” (Rom.11:16b)
John 15~ Records Jesus saying ~ “I am the vine, you are the branches”(5)…“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.”…“My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.”(8)…“You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain” (16)
It was God’s will and his initiative that has chosen us, set us apart and because of Him we are automatically holy branches. Anyone joined to him (in spirit) is by very definition holy.
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9)
Do you see how Peter declares that some of the fruit of the royal priests, the holy branches is simply to declare God’s goodness in the darkness?
James 3:1-12 speaks very profound truths about the power of our tongues/words. Immediately after that he jumps into wisdom. He compares “wisdom from above” and ” earthly, natural and even demonic wisdom”.
Consider it Holy wisdom or unholy wisdom. Paul called it the wisdom of man versus the wisdom of God. Solomon wrote of “the way that seems right to a man”.
I think our culture refers to is as “common sense”. God has given us an uncommon Spirit and Holy Spirit is the spirit of Heavenly wisdom. We could chose to depend on our own understanding or we could truly acknowledge our dependence on Him in all of our ways and trust that He is directing our paths.
It’s how a holy branch abides in the vine and bears much fruit. Abiding in Him is first and foremost about our mindset before it is our actions because our actions simply reveal our focus. “Even a child is known by his ways whether his conduct is pure or upright.”
“For a good tree brings not forth corrupt fruit; neither does a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 44For every tree is known by his own fruit… 45A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” (Luke 6)
As a branch connected to the Holy Root, a Priest for the Lord; we bear eternal fruits of the Holy Spirit automatically when we are abiding in Him. We don’t have to try to force fruit. God creates the opportunities and directs us as they arise before us. We can examine our own hear by the fruit of our lips, by the opportunities that are in our life and how we have responded.
When we abide in him; we will witness his uncommon words of wisdom and life coming out of us!
