Past, Present and Future

PAST ~

The Scriptures make it clear that there are multiple aspects to our Salvation; our redemption. Ephesians 1 lays down a powerful foundation for the FINISHED part of our salvation upon being “born-again”. This profound chapter references “IN CHRIST” about 10 times because Paul is writing about the redemption and promises to our spirit, which is joined to the Lord (1 Cor.6:17). The spirit is the completely new creation because the born-again spirit is “IN CHRIST”. (2 Cor.5:17)

Eph.1:7 ~“in whom (Christ) we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses.”

The blood of Jesus has redeemed our spirit and declared our spirit forgiven forever! Because of this ~ “has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ” (Eph.1:3) There are so many amazing declarations of truth that apply to our spirit in this one chapter that we need to know are completed within us!

“By one sacrifice, he has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.” (Heb.10:14) seems like a complete contradiction if we don’t understand Heb.4:12, which declares that God’s Word divides between soul and spirit. But, Hebrews states about 5 different times that Jesus’ one sacrifice has accomplished forgiveness for us forever and this always applies to our spirit because our soul is PRESENTLY being sanctified.

PRESENT~

Jesus declared that whatever is born of spirit (God is spirit according to John 4) is spirit but, whatever is born of flesh is flesh. (John 3:6) It’s absolutely crucial for us to understand that our soul and body were not born of God when we received Holy Spirit, upon being “born-again.” This is the current work of sanctification mentioned above and it is a continual work of co-operation with the Spirit of God.

Romans 8 articulates this very clearly by encouraging us to set our mind (within our soul) on the Spirit and not the flesh. The mind set on the flesh leads to death but, the mind set on the Spirit IS life and peace. It’s simply not depending on our own understanding but acknowledging dependence on God in all of our ways because the wisdom of man is foolishness to God. His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts higher like the Heavens above the earth but, He has given us the mind of Christ!

This Christ-consciousness is IN our spirit, which is one with Holy Spirit but; we need to “release” it. Keys to releasing more Holy Spirit to our minds include ~ Scripture, prayer, fasting, worship, etc… but, there is one thing that we cannot neglect while doing these things. IDENTIFY ourselves as “In Christ” in the spirit. We really need to believe the past work with all of our being to become sanctified in the soul and fully follow the Spirit!

Ephesians 4:23-25 ~

“be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth 25Therefore, laying aside falsehood…”

We “put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” (Rom.13:14) by identifying ourselves with the New Creation; our new self, which is created righteous, holy in truth! We reject every lie about who we were because that old man was crucified with Christ (Romans 6:1-11)

FUTURE ~

We are promised a coming redemption of our bodies in Romans 8 ~“But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”

8:23 ~”but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.”

1 Thess.5:23,24 ~”Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.”
