In the Word made flesh (Jesus) was life and that life is what gives light to all mankind! (John 1:1,4) The light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it! (1:5)
In the Old Testament: the Word of God, the Scriptures, are referred to as the light. “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” But, in the New Covenant; Jesus revealed more. The Word is still light and guides our way! Jesus, The Word said in John 8:12 ~ “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
The followers of Jesus, the Word; will have the light of life and will not walk in darkness! Because Jesus was all about establishing the Kingdom of God; it’s pretty much all he talked about! He has delivered us from the Kingdom of darkness to receive of the inheritance in His Kingdom of Light! (Col.1:12,13)
Jesus spoke of his crucifixion and immediately after ~ (John 12:35) “Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going.”
If a person doesn’t know where they are going; they are walking in darkness. It doesn’t mean that we have to know every step in the path ahead of us but, we should know that we are walking in God’s will for our lives! “Send out Your light and Your truth, let them lead me!…” (Psalm 43:3)
As Jesus continued in John 12:46 ~ “I have come into the world as a light, so that everyone believing in Me should not abide/remain in darkness.” This isn’t an automatic to everyone who believes. For 2,000 years, there have been Christians who have received the light (being born-again) and yet not walked in the light and have, by default walked in darkness. The promise of having the “Light of Life” was given to those who follow Jesus!
“For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.” (Psalm 36:9)
There is a connection between light and life. After creating the Heavens and the earth and before God even created the sun, moon or stars; “God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.” We don’t know how there was light without any constellations but, that’s what He did. The Word, Jesus was with God and was God from the beginning too and in Jesus there was life…”The Light of Life”.
Immediately after one of Jesus’ most amazing miracles, when he fed 5,000 people with a few bread and fish and then walked on water he gave perhaps his most challenging message when he told the people ~ “I am the bread of life” and then ~ ““He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55“For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. 56“He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” (John 6)
After the thousands of people immediately left him; even the disciples were disturbed by this teaching and Jesus reassured them ~“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. (John 6:63)
I believe He was basically saying; don’t be so concerned with the fleshly symbolism of what I am saying. My words are spiritual and give life if you don’t try to digest them so literally and receive life from my Spirit.
Yes, the Bible stories literally happened and Jesus literally died for us; raised to life and is at the Throne of God in Heaven but we don’t have to literally eat his flesh and drink his blood to have eternal life. His Spirit gives us life in His Words! In the light; we see light. He has given us the Light of Life.
“For you were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light, 9for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth, 10proving what is well pleasing to the Lord.” (Eph.5:8-10)
It’s the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth that is the “Light of Life” that Jesus has given to us! Without the Spirit of the Lord; there is no freedom! The Letter of the Law kills and brings bondage but, the Spirit gives life! The Scriptures have glory but, without the light of the Spirit; it is only like the O.T. glory that was veiled but, every time we turn to the Spirit of the Lord; veils are removed and ~
“For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Cor.4:6)
That’s why it was good for Jesus to leave. He said in John 9:5 ~ “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” but in Matt.5:14 ~ ““You are the light of the world.” because immediately before Jesus went to the cross, He reassured the faithful disciples~ “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. (John 16:7)
This is what Isaiah prophesied in 60:1-2 ~“Arise, shine; for your light has come,
And the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.
2“For behold, darkness will cover the earth
And deep darkness the peoples;
But the LORD will rise upon you
And His glory will appear upon you.”
Jesus isn’t going to rise up on us in His body. We ARE his body! He is now our real life! He has given us his glory and his light is now are light and we are the light of the world!
