Parables, prophecies, dreams, visions…1/3rd of the Bible consists of words that are rich with this symbolism from the Spirit of God to convey ideas to us that are beyond human wisdom. Interestingly, we sleep about 1/3rd of our life and YES; God does still speak to us through dreams in the night.
The thing about these types of communication that has been a stumbling-block is the meaning behind the symbolism and how we can truly understand God’s will within the mysterious details. The Scriptures basically define the meanings of these symbols for us and only Holy Spirit gives us the wisdom and insight into the knowledge of the Father’s will within the “types and shadows”. (Col.1:9-11)
Hebrews is an incredibly deep book; full of rich symbolism because it was written to Jews (who seek signs but, Gentiles seek wisdom) and cannot be understood without knowing what the Spirit was conveying to them, at that time. Hebrews is filled with O.T. quotations, rituals, mysteries, mention of O.T. heroes and reference to the old Temple and it’s artifacts.
Because all of these things are important! Important in a symbolic way. That is; understanding how they pointed to Christ and how none of them now have any value in the physical sense but, “IN Christ”. That is; in spirit because “God is spirit and those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
There is much that I do not yet understand but, something very crucial that I only saw very recently. At the end of the book; after many contrasts between the Old Covenant (which was still passing away between around 33 and 70 A.D. ~ Hebrews 9:8,9) and it seems the New Covenant was increasingly being ushered in! The writer finally describes quite plainly how the OLD/symbolic was inferior and the NEW/spiritual was perfect!
“For you have not come to a mountain that can be touched and to a blazing fire, and to darkness and gloom and whirlwind, 19and to the blast of a trumpet and the sound of words which sound was such that those who heard begged that no further word be spoken to them.20 For they could not endure the order that was given, “If even a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned.” 21Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I tremble with fear.” (Hebrews 12:18-21)
The Kingdom of God, The New Covenant is not to be seen, touched or heard because last time that happened; everyone was afraid and could not handle the commands because it was too awesome and overwhelming!
Continuing uninterrupted in the next verse ~
“But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, 23and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.” (12:22-24)
But we HAVE come (yes, past tense) to Mount Zion and to the Heavenly (New) Jerusalem! That part right there was enough to make me slam on the brakes!
I have come to Mt. Zion and the Heavenly Jerusalem? The same Mt. Zion and Jerusalem described at the end of “The Revelation of Jesus Christ?!”
Hold on! I have never heard that in all my years of Christianity!
So, I sought the Lord in the Scriptures and found more interesting things and forgive me for moving one verse to articulate what Paul was saying in the way it makes the best sense to me.
ALL FROM GALATIANS 4 ~
“For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman.” (4:22) (skipping 23 until the end) “Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. 25Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.” (24-26) and back to (23) “But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise.”
Did he just declared that the Old covenant was represented by Hagar/Mt. Sinai/flesh/law/slavery and most interestingly the (then) present Jerusalem!? However; the New Covenant (Hooray!) is represented by Sarah/Mt.Zion?/spirit/promise/freedom and (gasp!) New Jerusalem from above…FOR SHE IS OUR MOTHER!
Yes, I believe he did say that! Please don’t take my word for it…seek the Lord in prayer and study for yourself!
Back to Gal.4 (and skipping only verse 27 for the sake of this study) ~
“Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. 29But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now. 30But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” 31So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.
We are compared to Isaac; not Ishmael. Not because we were born of Abraham’s blood either way but, because we are “Sons of Abraham by faith” and none of the O.T. laws are for us because they are all summed up in the one Law of the New Covenant ~ “34A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” but we are free to grow up into Christ in all things and not slaves, which are trying to earn an inheritance but, sons who receive the inheritance by promise! We have already come to Mt. Zion, the New Jerusalem from above (in the spirit) and we simply abide in Christ, remain in his love in relationship with God until we mature and are “conformed to the image of Christ” in every way!
What does this mean as far as Revelation prophecies of “Virgins standing with the Lamb on Mt.Zion” and “the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband” and “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, 11having the glory of God,“or “Blessed are those who wash their robes,e so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates.”???
I honestly don’t know but, have this sense that it’s not only something we are waiting to happen for us but something we are promised to receive even now if we overcome! Every time I hear the New testament promises of Jesus (Especially in John’s writings); I hear very similar promises given for us now!
Maybe that’s another study for another time…
