God’s original promise to Abraham was ~ “your very own son shall be your heir.” 5And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 6And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.” (Gen.15:4-6)
The Original promise to Abraham’s seed was only to be as the stars in the heavens.
After Abraham (briefly) doubted God and gave in to temptation to fulfill God’s promises according to his flesh and had Ishmael; God added something to the promise.
“By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies.18“In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed.” (Gen.22:16-18)
I believe there is a clear distinction given between Abraham’s two seeds. The “son of the promise’s” seed will still shine as the stars but, the “son of the flesh” will only be like sand. Sand is numerous but, not nearly as glorious as stars.
We know that we are “seed of Abraham” by faith; which is how we were born of God. But, there is some more interesting allegory that was hidden in this story according to Paul.
“22For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman. 23But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise. 24Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. 25Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia;e she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.” (Gal.4:22-26)
The Galatians were born-again but were acting like “sons of the flesh” because they were trying to mature according to fleshly works! (Gal.3:3)
Works is the Old Covenant way but, the new covenant is by the Spirit in grace and truth! We are now righteous in Christ (in the spirit) and we continue in righteousness by faith by following the Spirit. (Rom.1:17, Gal.3:11 and Heb.10:38)
28Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. 29But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now. 30But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” 31So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.” (Gal.4:28-31)
Cast out the Old Covenant (laws not promises) because we are children of New Jerusalem, the free New Covenant! Abraham was looking for a city built by God where righteousness dwells but we have come to that city! (Heb.12:18,22-23)
We are of those that God promised to Abraham and Daniel prophesied about in 12:3 ~ “And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.”
I previously wrote about our permanent righteousness in the spirit by faith in Christ but, something else that the Scriptures reveal many times is that spiritual wisdom precedes righteousness. (1 Cor.1:30, James 3:13-18 and note the change in Proverbs from chapters 1-9 where the focus is mostly wisdom and it shifts to righteousness in chapter 10)
I was born-gain for years and prayed for God’s wisdom before the Spirit of Truth revealed the permanence of the righteousness of faith. The New Covenant is more than forgiveness of sins it’s the promise of abundant grace and the free gift of righteousness forever in the spirit to reign in life through Jesus Christ as Lord! (Rom.5:17)
Jesus has established righteousness forever but, it’s in Him which is in the Spirit! ~Romans 8:”10But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness!”
NOW we shine like stars in the heavens because “But the way of the righteous ones is like the shining light, and the light progresses until the day is established.” (Prov.4:18)
The promise to Abraham’s seed of the promise was not to be like literal stars just as we are not literally going to be physical pillars or stones in “New Jerusalem”. We are now literally righteous forever and we are now the light of the world!
