Galatians was written to the believers in Galatia who were being seduced by Judiazers who had crept in to try to steal their freedom. Paul writes very emphatically throughout about their need to depend on faith alone and reject any and all works for means of God’s approval.
In Gal.3 He identifies us as “children of Abraham” through faith in Jesus Christ multiple times. (Gal.3:7, Gal.3:9, Gal.3:14) This means that we are heirs of all the promises given to Abraham because they were given before the LAW 3:17 ~This is what I mean: the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void.”
Don’t worry, we still respect the Law for the unrighteous! (1 Tim.1:8,9) but, we have been crucified with Christ to the Law (in the Spirit) and are alive to righteousness forever by his work!
“21Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law.”22But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
The Law was given as a temporary teacher until the fulfillment of all God’s laws and promises came in the flesh of Jesus!
“23Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. 24So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. 25But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slaveg nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.”
We see that Abraham typified Christ in many ways. However; Abraham was given the promise that his seed would inherit the Land that he never even stepped foot into!
Acts 7 ~4Then he went out from the land of the Chaldeans and lived in Haran. And after his father died, God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living. 5Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot’s length, but promised to give it to him as a possession and to his offspring after him, though he had no child.”
Consider how that speaks of Jesus existence on earth for 30-some years! When Jesus died; God removed him from here to the land we are now living in! (Eph.1:3, 2:6, Col.3:3,Heb.12:22 ) But, Jesus did not receive even a foot’s length of His inheritance while he lived because the promised Covenant couldn’t be given before his blood was given and he died! ~“16For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. 17For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive. 18Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood.” (Heb.9:16-18)
Jesus didn’t inaugurate the New Covenant at “The Sermon on the Mount”. He had to initiate/dedicate it with blood, which he did at the “Last Supper” immediately before he went to the cross. Matthew, Mark and Luke all record him mentioning this act and we have to be careful not to mix his previous words (Old Covenant fulfillment in the New Testament) with His future Covenant.
Just because Jesus gave those commandments to the Jews (who were still living under that Old Covenant) does not mean they were for us (The New has come!) That’s right you don’t have to sell all your possessions and give them to the poor to inherit eternal life because Jesus fulfilled it and eternal life is HIS inheritance not ours!
What Jesus didn’t have in this life; He provided for us in him now!
It’s HIS inheritance and we HAVE received it IN HIM! It’s ALL already given to us IN CHRIST (in our spirit) and we simply need to receive by faith what we already have! Read Ephesians 1 from this perspective and pray everyday according to 1:17-19 and know that it is being revealed by the Spirit of God!
