Jesus spoke of the gift of the Holy Spirit to the thirsty Samaritan woman (representing non-Jews whom the Lord was about to reveal himself too)
~10Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water. (John 4:10)
But she doubted the water that she couldn’t see. She doubted Jesus’ superiority to their ancestors but, Jesus reassures her ~
“Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; 14but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” (John 4:13b,14)
Jesus focus is never on just getting us to Heaven but that we will not be thirsty! Because his abundant grace more than satisfies us internally!
“Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. 38“He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” 39But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” (John 7:37-39)
The Holy Spirit is the Living Waters prophesied throughout the Old Testament and he comes from within when we believe because Jesus has already been glorified!
It’s overwhelmingly agreed by Biblical scholars that Jesus did not quote any specific verse in Scriptures but, there are many similar references to “Living Waters flowing” in the Old Testament. Interestingly, they prophesied the “River” flowing from Jerusalem, Zion or God’s Temple!
“What know ye not that you are the temple of God?”
“I saw water coming out from under the threshold of the temple” Ezekiel 47:1
“”On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity.” ~ Zech.13:1
The fountain of Life is not some magical, future event that we are waiting to die to drink from. He’s Holy Spirit within us and God wants to pour him out of us like a river into the dry places of the earth!
5Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; 6then shall the lame man leap like a deer,
and the tongue of the mute sing for joy. For waters break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; 7the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water” ~ Isaiah 35
“3You will draw water joyfully from the springs of salvation.” ~ Isaiah 12:3 The original Hebrew word salvation is Yeshua, which is Jesus. So we drink water from the fountain springs of Jesus!
” 1Then he showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb,” Rev.22:1
“6Then He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost.7“He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.” Rev.21:6,7
1“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.2Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.3Incline your ear, and come to me;
hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David.” ~ Isaiah 55:1-3
His promise of love satisfies us. Remain in His love. Receive His love! Drink from his love which is deeper, wider, higher, and longer than anything we can comprehend! Be filled up with the fullness of God and his love for you! (Eph.3:17-19)
That’s how God pours his love out of us like rivers of Living Waters that produces more life and redemption than we can possibly imagine…through us! (Next verse-Eph.3:20)
