Isaiah’s Revelation (Chap.8)

5Again the LORD spoke to me further, saying,

      6“Inasmuch as these people have rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah
            And rejoice in Rezin and the son of Remaliah;

      7“Now therefore, behold, the Lord is about to bring on them the strong and abundant waters of the Euphrates,
            Even the king of Assyria and all his glory;
            And it will rise up over all its channels and go over all its banks.

      8“Then it will sweep on into Judah, it will overflow and pass through,
            It will reach even to the neck;
            And the spread of its wings will fill the breadth of your land, O Immanuel.

The Lord compares the Assyrian King invading Israel to the Euphrates river sweeping through the city and filling the land. It makes me think of the prophecy of the 6th Bowel in Revelation 16:12 ~12The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river, the Euphrates; and its water was dried up, so that the way would be prepared for the kings from the east.” It makes me wonder if John is again referencing an obscure O.T. prophecy and comparing the Euphrates to “Babylon”. Maybe Babylon “drying up” allowed other religious systems/spirits to fill the land. But, that may just be my imagination…

13“It is the LORD of hosts whom you should regard as holy.
            And He shall be your fear,
            And He shall be your dread.

Jesus was the Lord of Hosts, YHWH Saboath in the flesh. They showed him no reverence.

      14“Then He shall become a sanctuary;
            But to both the houses of Israel, a stone to strike and a rock to stumble over,
            And a snare and a trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

 15“Many will stumble over them,
            Then they will fall and be broken;
            They will even be snared and caught

Jesus referred to His body as the temple (the sanctuary). He was also the CornerStone of the New and final Temple that will not be built by human hands but whose builder is God! The Stone that the builders rejected and stumbled over. The inhabitants of Old Jerusalem were the builders but the Kingdom was taken from them (only because they rejected it) and given to those who would receive it by faith and not works.

     16Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.

Wow. We saw in chapter 6 why Jesus spoke in parables. This must be Holy Spirit speaking on behalf of Jesus through Isaiah. Testimony was “bound” for those who refused to turn (change their minds but depend on their own understanding) but the secrets of the Kingdom ARE given to Jesus’ true disciples!

17And I will wait for the LORD who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob; I will even look eagerly for Him. 18Behold, I and the children whom the LORD has given me are for signs and wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion.”

Jesus waited (trusted/completely depended) on His God and our God. He said he only did what he saw the Father doing and only spoke the words of the Father and sought the Father’s glory never his own. I believe the following verse confirms this is Jesus speaking because the author of Hebrews quoted it in Heb.2 ~

That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, 12saying,“I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.”13And again,“I will put my trust in him.”And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.”

I’m going to speculate a little more and some may consider it dangerous. Because I believe Isaiah may be speaking symbolically about these following verses (as usual) and what I believe the Holy Spirit interprets this may be offensive to some.

 19When they say to you, “Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,” should not a people consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?

Jesus reprimanded the religious leaders because they searched the Scriptures but would not turn to Him! He even said that Moses wrote about them and they did not believe his words, so Moses would condemn them in the last day!

How many times did the religious Jews reject the living God and not consult Jesus about His words while he was standing in their midst but instead talk amongst themselves? They whispered, muttered and compared Scripture but rejected the Word of God in the flesh!

20 (A)To the law and to the testimony!

They returned to their old ways, always running back to depending on their understanding (or their fore-father’s traditions) of the Law and the testimony but ignored the Word, Himself…the one who IS the MorningStar and therefore they had no dawn in them. (Holy Spirit IS the Light of life).

20(B)If they do not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn.

Whenever I read O.T. references to “The Word of God”, I consider it to mean Jesus and not merely Scripture. I do believe ALL Scripture is “God-breathed” and profitable for doctrine for reproof, for correction and instruction in righteousness that the man of God may be complete and equipped for every good work! I obviously have a profound respect for Scripture but, I have also literally idolized the Bible in the past. Because of John 1, I was very close to being ready to literally worship the book of the Bible and have since realized that Jesus alone is worthy of worship. He is the Word of God that is exalted above God’s own name in Heaven! (Psalm 138:2). To me, the Scriptures are God’s Word’s but Jesus is the Good News. Jesus is the Word of God that was with God and was (still is ) God!

The letter kills but the spirit gives life. Jesus word’s are spirit and life.

Sorry about that rabbit trail…

21They will pass through the land hard-pressed and famished, and it will turn out that when they are hungry, they will be enraged and curse their king and their God as they face upward. 22Then they will look to the earth, and behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish; and they will be driven away into darkness.

The Jews of that generation (30AD-70AD) were about to enter the greatest tribulation to ever come on that land and it was because they cursed their King and their God. They had “The King of the Jews” hung on a tree and O.T. Law declared “Cursed is anyone who hangs on a tree.”

What better fulfillment could we expect?

They ignored looking to the one who was from above and is above all, even as they lifted him up! They must’ve hung their heads in shame when the sky turned dark, the earthquaked and even the Roman soldiers acknowledged they had just killed the Son of God. Within that generation; distress, darkness and gloom of anguish came on them like no other time in history.

Romans 13 seems to call the age of the LAW darkness and the age of love is the light that we are now in.

Rom.13:8Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law…10Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. 11Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed. 12The night is almost gone, and the day is near.

1 John 2 ~ ” 7Beloved, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you have heard. 8On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true Light is already shining.”

It’s time for us to arise and shine for our light has come! Christ has given us HIS LIGHT! The Holy Spirit is the same light, power and glory of the Lord Jesus, our Lord God Almighty and King of Kings!

Christ in us, the hope of glory!
