Of Mountains and Cities

1The word which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

      2Now it will come about that
            In the last days
            The mountain of the house of the LORD
            Will be established as the chief of the mountains,
            And will be raised above the hills;
            And all the nations will stream to it.

      3And many peoples will come and say,
            “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,
            To the house of the God of Jacob;
            That He may teach us concerning His ways
            And that we may walk in His paths.”
            For the law will go forth from Zion
            And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. ~ Isaiah 2:1-3

Gill’s Exposition of the Entire Bible ~
And it shall come to pass in the last days,…. The days of the Messiah, as Aben Ezra rightly interprets it; and it is a rule laid down by Kimchi and Ben Melech, that wherever the last days are mentioned, the days of the Messiah are intended. The days of the Messiah commenced in the latter part of the Old Testament dispensation, or Jewish world, towards the close of their civil and church state, at the end of which he was to come, Habakkuk 2:3and accordingly did, which is called the end of the world (
Literally – AGE), and the last days; that is, of that state, Hebrews 1:2 and ushered in the world to come (Literally – world that is coming), or Gospel dispensation, which is properly the days of the Messiah”  ~ Words in italics Quoted verbatim

This power prophecy was spoken from the mouth multiple witnesses and Micah 4:1-3 practically verbatim.

The issue is that we must remember the context of these prophecies were always to Israel. They were the Covenant nation, God’s chosen people who received all of God’s words. When these prophets declared “The last days…” they were not declaring the “end of the world” or speaking about things that we are waiting to see fulfilled. They were prophesying the last days of their Covenant Age. Even “Fathers” as early as Jacob and Moses had prophesied “The Last days” and the prophecies involved Israel, their rejection of God’s Word (Jesus ~ John 1:1) and God’s Covenant (In Christ) NOT the destruction of the world and not simply rejecting Torah of the Old Covenant.

Hebrews, Galatians and Revelation all contrast the Old Covenant and the progressively increasing New Covenant which Jesus did not initiate at his Birth but at the Last Supper ~

“This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” ~ Luke 22:20b

16For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it. 17For a covenant is valid only when men are dead, for it is never in force while the one who made it lives. 18Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood. ~ Heb.9:16-18

We don’t simply live like Jesus (who was born and lived under the LAW) but, we live in the New Covenant which was not even introduced until the time of Jesus’ death! That’s why all of the Old Covenant saints (even John the Baptist) were not as blessed as the least in the New Covenant Kingdom!

The Kingdom, the Covenant, New Jerusalem, God’s House and the Mount of the Lord (Mt. Zion) are all synonymous according to Scripture. They are different terms describing the same reality…”Us in Christ and Christ in us!” Col.1:27, Col.3:3, John 15:4

Paul used the OT symbolism of 2 Mountains and 2 Women to contrast the 2 Covenants. (Can your mind help but wander in wonder to Revelation?) in Galatians 4

” 21Tell me, you who want to be under law, do you not listen to the law? 22For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the bondwoman and one by the free woman.

Issac, the son of Sarah represented the Promised New Covenant received in faith but, Ishmael represented the Old Covenant of works of the Law which was slavery! New Covenant is liberty as Sons and daughter’s of God because of Jesus Christ as our righteousness…even God’s very own righteousness given to us forever in our spirit! No one could be justified and declared righteous by the works of the Law or by being born in the flesh (bloodline) as a literal child of Abraham but we are sons (and daughters) of Abraham by faith in Jesus Christ!

23But the son by the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise. 24This is allegorically speaking, for these women are two covenants: one proceeding from Mount Sinai bearing children who are to be slaves; she is Hagar. 25Now this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26But the Jerusalem above is free; she is our mother.

I don’t know how literal to take New Jerusalem (The New Covenant) as our mother but, the point is that when we were born-again; we were born into Christ and therefore in the New Covenant.

Everything that belongs to God is ours because we are (in the Spirit) wrapped up in each other. 1 Cor.6: ~ 15Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?…19Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God…17But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him.

I had to hammer these truths into my mind and heart before I began to perceive the reality of this truth! He has already done this in us and we are already at the Mountain, IN New Jerusalem!

3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,

Hebrews 12 clarified it more in describing what the senses see, hear, smell and touch ~ 18For you have not come to a mountain that can be touched(read 18b -21)...compared to the New Covenant reality righteousness of faith IN Christ ~ 22But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem!”

14“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill (literally Mountain) cannot be hidden; 15nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. ~ Matt.5

1“Arise, shine; for your light has come,
            And the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.

      2“For behold, darkness will cover the earth
            And deep darkness the peoples;
            But the LORD will rise upon you
            And His glory will appear upon you.

      3“Nations will come to your light,
            And kings to the brightness of your rising. ~ Isaiah 60

14For this reason it says,
“Awake, sleeper,
And arise from the dead,
And Christ will shine on you.” ~ Eph.5:14

Returning to the original passage in Isaiah 2 :5 ~Come, house of Jacob, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.”

We are the City (New Jerusalem) on Mt.Zion and we are the light of the world because our light has come (Christ in us!)…wake up and walk int the light we have been given and shine!
