Continuing the theme from “What Was Finished?” which explained how Jesus finished/fulfilled the Law on the cross, we need to recognize that we were with Him in the spirit.
That may sound weird but, one of the crucial elements of the Gospel is living by the faith (and not what we see) that God’s words are true! We were joined to the Lord in spirit.Don’t let anyone (not even your own mind) divide or separate what God has joined together!
I’m skipping the declarations of resurrection in these passages until the next post to emphasize the “Having Died (past tense) with Him” aspect…
Romans 6 ~3Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death…. 5For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death… 6knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin…8Now if we have died with Christ…. 11Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin…”
It’s clear that Paul wanted them to understand that they had been crucified with Christ.
Our “spirit man” or “old man” was forever crucified with Jesus Christ at the Cross and buried with Him in baptism! We need to stop letting the enemy convince us that the Law and sin have power over us because satan can’t resurrect what God has killed and buried in the grave!
Having become born-again is so much more than being saved to go to Heaven one day! We were joined with Christ in His death, crucified with Him and the Law so that we are now dead to sin! Sin had no power over us if we would only believe! We were born-again to live a completely transformed life by renewing our minds in the truth! (Rom.12:1,2)
1For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea; 2and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea…11Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. ~ 1 Cor.10
I believe the symbolism of baptism “into Moses” under the cloud and in the sea that the Israelites went through should be compared to Jesus’ baptism. Picture the Israelites walking between the “walls of water” while under the covering of the cloud. The covering cloud (Psalm 105:39) would have blocked their view of the heavens. If they looked up all they would see was the cloud/veil! This word “covering” used to describe the cloud is literally rooted in the exact same word used to describe the veil/curtain that covered/concealed the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle!
But, when Jesus was baptized, the Heavens opened and the fullness of the Holy Spirit rested and stayed upon Him! The cloud covering was torn open and removed for us forever! He made this all available to us (In Him)…
16whenever a person turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.” ~ 2 Cor.3
The key is to reckon/consider ourselves to have literally been united with him (in the spirit) in this death and burial (Romans 6:10,11) and Gal.2:19-20 again to partake of his resurrection life and power in this world! ( Ephesians 1:19) But that idea needs to be explored further in the next post concerning the Resurrection of Jesus!
