Create a Clean Heart in Me!

I love the Scriptures…a lot. Possibly too much some times but, that’s another story. I also love worship music and honoring who God is in praise. So, I naturally enjoy Scriptural worship songs that give him glory!

However, some songs that even quote Scripture do not truly honor the victorious accomplishment of Jesus Christ. Consider some of the lyrics from the song “Create in me a clean heart”

Create in me a clean heart, oh God
And renew a right spirit within me
Create in me a clean heart, oh God
And renew a right spirit within me
Cast me not away from Thy Presence, oh Lord
And take not Thy Holy Spirit from me
Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation
And renew a right spirit within me

This is almost verbatim from Psalm 51, so it is Scriptural but, does it honor the Lord?

What I mean is…Is it worship to God in spirit and in truth? (John 4:24)

We love the Scriptures and believe that they are all God-breathed (Holy Spirit inspired) and profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness BUT, not every word in them directly applies to us! There are multiple different Covenants (arguably 5 or 6) articulated within the 66 letters (also called books) and only “The New Covenant Law” directly applies to us.

Many commands within the Bible have absolutely nothing to do with us or anyone else in the New Covenant.

It does not dishonor God to neglect too keep a command that is not for you…it would dishonor Him if you tried too.

David’s song in the 51st Psalm is a very good example of how not to react or think in the New Covenant. David lived about 1,000 years before Jesus. During the inferior “Old Covenant”, God did not permanently inhabit people on the inside. God came and rested on a few chosen vessels but was never able to join to their spirit like He has with the Born-again believer. (1 Cor.6:17) In the Old Covenant, there was the fear that God’s Spirit would lift off even God’s anointed people because of their sin. Consider King Saul.

But, the former ways have been done away with!

David prayed that God would not take away His Presence or the Holy Spirit from him. Whether that was right or wrong back then is not my point. However, we do know now that “God will never leave us or forsake us” and “The Anointing that God has given us abides with us forever” so it would be unbelief in God’s promises for us to pray or sing that today.

Look, I’m no saying that God is mad if you have ever prayed that because I have done it and He’s not. The point is that “without faith it is impossible to please God” so, lets not try to worship him in unbelief and deception. Let’s not be destroyed for a lack of knowledge but lets partake of His divine nature (that he’s already given us in Christ) through intimate knowledge of Him.

10Create in me a clean heart, O God,

And renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

This may have been a great prayer under their Covenant because they were constantly in need of symbolic animal sacrifice to blot out (cover) their sins. However, this desperate prayer has been completely fulfilled once and for all!

A few hundred years later, Ezekiel prophesied the fulfillment of this in the New Covenant in Ezekiel 36 ~

25“Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26“Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27“I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.”

The important aspects of this are 1.) Sprinkled clean with water 2.) New heart of flesh 3.) New Spirit (even God’s Spirit)

Notice how clear Jesus articulated His fulfillment of this in John 3. Remember that Jesus was talking to a teacher of Jewish Law. Nicodemus was well educated in the Old Testament writings and prophecies. He should have immediately picked up on what Jesus was laying down.

5Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

1.) Water 2.) Spirit 3.) Flesh

We have been given God’s Spirit and our spirit is joined to His Spirit but, the New heart we have received is only flesh! He has cleaned it for us! One of our main problems is not a bad heart but a deceived heart that is not sincere in full assurance of the faith! God cleaned it but it’s the full assurance of faith in his accomplishment that keeps it clean!

Good works do not purify our heart. Good works flow from a pure heart. (Heb.9:14)

“we should draw near with a sincere heart, in full assurance of faith, our hearts having been sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our body having been washed with pure water” ~ Heb.10:22

We are not drawing near to God to get a pure heart and clean conscience. We are supposed to be drawing near (in sincere faith) with a pure heart and clean conscience because we have been washed! There are 3 testimonies that we hold in the New Testament and they are all based on Jesus and what He has already done, not us.

4For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

5Who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 6This is the One who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with the water and with the blood. It is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7For there are three that testify: 8the Spirit and the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. ~ 1 John 5

The key component to God’s “3 witnesses” is faith. We can be born-again by the blood, washed in the water and filled with the Spirit but if we are not abiding in faith that these are a once and done deal on our behalf…we will not experience the victory of Jesus.

This three-fold “cleansing” was accomplished for us by Jesus not by us for Jesus!

“you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” ~ 1 Cor.6:11

This is the too Good too be true News of the Gospel! This is the reality of the New Covenant for the New Creation in Christ!

10All the paths of the LORD are lovingkindness and truth, To those who keep His covenant and His testimonies.” ~ Psalm 25:10
